WhatsApp, the world's most used messaging platform, blocked more than 8.4 million (84 lakh) Indian WhatsApp accounts within 1 month.
According to foreign media, the said action was taken by WhatsApp's parent company Meta in view of fraudulent activities.
According to reports, WhatsApp received complaints from 10,707 users during August 2024, of which 93% of the complaints were immediately taken action.
Meta has blocked around 8.45 million Indian WhatsApp accounts in India under the Information Technology Act.
It should be noted that WhatsApp says that the account bans have been imposed after users reported fraud and suspicious activities, while the purpose of blocking accounts is to strengthen the protection of the integrity of the platform.
Earlier, the instant messaging application WhatsApp started testing the feature of adding other social media accounts to users' accounts.
Currently, the administration is providing the facility to business users to add their website or other social media accounts, however, this facility was not available to general users before.
