A unique solution to tackle the growing problem of waste: In 2015, the administration of the French village of Colmar gave every rural household a pair of chickens for free to keep the area clean.
The goal was for the chickens to consume most of the household's organic waste, and this initiative was highly successful, reducing the village's waste by 50%.
Seeing the success of this experiment, not only France but also neighboring Belgium's village governments started giving free chickens to their residents, creating a win-win situation. The government has to deal with less waste, and citizens receive free eggs every day.
